PERSONALITY & HISTORY 

P E R S O N A L I T Y : 
Inga is good at acting whatever part he needs to, but is also, generally speaking, a genuinely pleasant person – while initially guarded and reluctant to really engage in conversations or activities, he is outgoing and enthusiastic around people who will talk to him, surprisingly smart for someone with little-to-no formal education, and incredibly loyal to his friends and family. After living a difficult life, he tends to be mistrustful of others' intentions (especially men) and is often unintentionally manipulative, but also has an astonishing resiliency that allows him to more or less shrug off most difficulties in life as minor problems in a grander scheme. However, this comes with an unfortunate caveat because when something genuinely gets under his skin, it really, really, really sets him off. And once he loses it, Inga – already a bit of a hot mess – goes from a decent person to a mean-tempered, self-destructive whirlwind of reckless, manic activity: he'll sleep around, take massive risks with his property or life, and even get into fights he clearly can't win a.k.a. all of them. During these times, he's best left to his work or with his cousins because either way he'll wear himself out eventually and spend the next few days exhausted and apologetic, but the strain of the cycle clearly takes its toll. Additionally, he hates talking about his episodes and goes out of his way to avoid triggering them, resulting in a retreat behind coyness, shamelessness, and a promiscuous attitude.

H I S T O R Y :
Inga was born and raised in a capital city brothel by his mother, a yujo. He spent his childhood in the brothel's halls, cleaning or running minor errands but always kept away from clients. His mother, low in the brothel's pecking order, often took rougher clients but as Inga grew into his teens her health began to decline. Under the growing shadow of potential poverty and eviction, 18-year-old Inga started volunteering to take on some of the jobs she couldn't do, and took her place in the brothel a year later under the condition that a portion of his earnings go to her health. That same year, an aristocratic client took an interest in Inga and paid an enormous amount of money for his exclusive service. Inga, rocketed to a position as the brothel's highest earner, immediately hired a nurse to look after his fading mother but felt uneasy around his new client – the other man was just a little too rowdy, and involved in a few too many nasty rumors floating around.

Still, the money was enough... until the aristocrat began to take out minor frustrations on Inga, first verbally abusing him or shoving him around but quickly escalating to outright violence. But the brothel was flying high on Inga's earnings and so for a year, the cycle continued: Inga would care for his mother in the afternoons, go to work at night, emerge in the early hours of the morning covered in bruises or blood or tears, and repeat it all the next night. Finally, Inga's mother passed in her sleep and when the aristocrat flew into a rage at Inga's crying and beat him nearly unconscious for it, that was the final straw. After the man fell asleep, Inga packed his bag, took every last coin he'd earned, and ran. Between the capital and Mizuyama, there isn't much to his story worth telling – he slept curled up in trees or ditches, ate wild game or stole from farms and markets, and took every job he could get his hands on after he ran out of money. But one day, he stumbled into Mizuyama and happened to walk into a pair of people with a stunning resemblance to his mother...

• Has a medium-high but very husky voice.

• Is mildly terrified of the prospect of old age, and obsessive about maintaining his appearance. (Doesn't stop him from looking like he just rolled out of bed 99% of the time, but at least he has nice skin.) 
• His dad is Russian, probably. Inga's never met him, and doesn't want to. 
• Good at painting and calligraphy, although he doesn't really know how to write – he mostly learned by watching courtesans during his childhood and imitating them. 

• Relationships:
• Megumi Sato - his cousin, older than him by a few months. Spent a lot of time helping Inga to get settled in Mizuyama when he first arrived. While she's not always impressed with his more immature behavior and often scolds him for eating badly/dressing unfashionably/refusing to kill spiders for her, the two of them are still close and Inga spends a lot of his spare time helping her in her shop. 
• Kai Aozora - his much older cousin. Inga was initially a little intimidated by him, but realized eventually that Kai was a genuinely decent person without an ulterior bone in his body and warmed up to the older man. By now, Inga has kind of imprinted onto Kai (largely related to the strong resemblance between Kai and Inga's mother, in both looks and personality).
